Gallery Ragini presents an exhibition by Rohit Sharma titled Romancing the Road

Rohit Sharma’s exhibition focus on the various nuances of everyday life associated with the city roads.

November 11, 2009 /India PRwire/ — With its aim of supporting the emerging contemporary artists, Gallery Ragini presents Romancing the Road, a solo exhibit of artworks by Rohit Sharma at Choko La, Khan Market, New Delhi from November 13, 2009 to December 12, 2009.

What’s interesting is that the opening of the exhibition will be marked with an evening of poetry by art curator Alka Raghuvanshi, poets Robinson, Laxmi Shankar Vajpayi and Ravinder Malhotra. Says Nidhi Jain, Director, Gallery Ragini: “Art and poetry have an interminable bond and evoke feelings of oneness. Both are reflections of sensitive souls trying to create, understand and contribute to human growth at the highest level. Through this endeavor of bringing the two art forms together, we attempt to explore the romance between poetry and art in an evening of poets reading their works amongst art works and people who love and care about art and poetry.”

Coming back to the exhibits, Rohit’s works focus on the various nuances of everyday life associated with the city roads. Says Rohit Sharma: “Every city has a way of encompassing individuals in its own way. The diversity of the Delhi is extremely spell-binding as there exists landmarks representing the ancient, medieval and modern that gives Delhi a unique identity. The roads that lead on to these landmarks have their own stories to tell. These works thus, talk about Delhi, its antiquity, rich cultural heritage and constant growth.”

Rohit’s romance of the roads has a timeless quality about it as he documents the various periods and the transition that has taken place. His fascination for minute details makes the works subtle-offering a whole new perspective to the viewer making one wonder if there is more to a road than just the destination.

The cow, that plays an integral part of the works, finds itself at crossroads within the changing urban scenario. Interplaying with the maze of the road-converging, diverging, Rohit’s cows are in a state of question, answer, conflict, dilemma and most of the time in deep meditative contemplation.

Rohit explores the idea of Kamadhenu- the mythical cow of fulfilling all desires and wishes it to be true in today’s context. He shows the helplessness of the Kamadhenu by painting it black, showing it is impossible for the Kamadhenu as well to fulfill the needs of today’s time. His portrayal of the white and black Kamadhenu together shows that they are very much two sides of the same coin. The work titled Kamdhenu with milk displays how human breed wants to empty it of all that it has to offer merrily leaving it as a shadow of its former self.

The use of red in the background in most of the works is a conscious effort to draw attention to the road rage evident in our city. It also in many ways signifies attraction for the outsider. The riddle for the young child to make the calf reach its mother in the work titled Puzzled is a beautiful way to communicate about the present state. On the other hand, Modern Cow shows the replacement of cows by the milk vans. The modern cow (milk van) which travels everyday from the outskirts of Delhi on four wheels makes an interesting satirical comment. The depiction of the vehicles with tails, bringing milk into the city and is a reflection of the cultural change with life moving at an uncontrollable pace.

Rohit is touched by the obvious and easy to ignore but none can deny the role played in the life of denizens of Delhi by the ubiquitous auto-rickshaw. The young man with a backpack pushing the auto-rickshaw makes a subtle comment as how much goes in everyday journey-the cajoling, pleading and threatening. His vintage car of a bygone era is a reflection of the attachment of the owner not willing to let go taking pride in his possession. He paints his vintage cars golden, showing what they truly are.

These works overall, are a reflection of Rohit’s intimacy with his city, his love of its various simple aspects from the roads, the cows, the old cars, inviting all of us to look at the obvious with a new understanding and sensibility.

Walmart and CARE Launch New Initiative to Empower Marginalized Women in India

750 families will be positively impacted by the partnership

November 10, 2009 /India PRwire/ — As a part of their commitment to women’s empowerment, Walmart and CARE announced the launch of a Cashew Value Chain Initiative. As part of the Walmart Foundation’s $1 million grant to CARE, a leading humanitarian organization, this project marks the first of a series of initiatives to elevate women from poverty worldwide. Over the next year, Walmart and CARE will create a women owned-and-operated community-based institution to provide more equitable and consistent incomes for approximately 750 women in the cashew farming and processing sector in the coastal districts of Tamil Nadu State in Southern India, Cuddalore and Nagapattinam.

“This project will improve economic opportunities for socially and economically marginalized women and girls in southern India through the promotion of women-owned and -managed cashew enterprises,” said Raj Jain, managing director and CEO, Bharti Walmart. “We are excited about the difference we will make in the lives of these women as we are confident the project will improve their entrepreneurial skills and capacity to directly link to the retail market.”

Through the partnership, Walmart and CARE aim to improve overall livelihoods for women involved in the cashew processing sector: enhancing income earning opportunities by 20 percent, improving participants’ literacy and business skills, and ensuring greater awareness about health and nutrition. The benefits of this initiative will reach beyond the women themselves, impacting the lives of nearly 4,000 people.

“CARE is eager to work with Walmart on an issue that is of critical importance in Tamil Nadu, and throughout so many communities in India – the elevation of women from poverty,” said Helene Gayle, president and CEO of CARE. “Our work together is particularly important in this area as families in Tamil Nadu continue to rebuild their lives after the 2004 tsunami. Walmart’s investment will ensure increased income security, which we know leads to greater health and education opportunities for these women and their families.”

Over the next year, the program will help to set up three women-owned and managed cashew processing units and 15 literacy centers. Training programs will be conducted for participating women and their daughters on basic social services, rights and entitlement issues. The program will also establish direct links between cashew producers, the women-owned processing units, and the global marketplace.

“This initiative falls in line with Walmart’s overarching strategy to support girls, women and the organizations and issues of importance to them,” said Margaret McKenna, president, Walmart Foundation. “We are listening to our female customers around the world and want to further demonstrate our commitment to them and their economic empowerment.” Cashew is one of the important cash crops of India. There are more than 700 small- scale cashew processing units in southern India, and the sector provides employment to 500,000 people, mostly women.

Dhoni, others party after India’s defeat

Dhoni, others party after India's defeat

As the nation mourned the loss of India by mere 3 runs, some of the big boys of the Indian team were seen partying with a gaggle of girls. The losers’ party saw Indian Captain M S Dhoni enjoying the evening with his fellow players including Ravindra Jadeja, Ashish Nehra, Virender Sehwag and Praveen Kumar. Perhaps the gang chose to ‘celebrate’ the defeat and move on!

Sachin Tendulkar, meanwhile, was the only Indian cricketer to have given the party a miss. After all, he had scored a memorable 175 earlier that evening.

The question, however, arises: Are the Indian players out of line in behaving like this after a harrowing day’s play? Or they just wanted to relax this way? Looking at the pictures, it is difficult to play judge on this one…

NewsX got access to exclusive picture to the losers’ party from a hotel in Hyderabad where Indian players were seen partying after the Indian team lost to Australia. Stay tuned to NewsX for more updates.

MindTree Becomes Testing Entity for CUPPS Certification

MindTree among a few companies certified to help airlines and airports transition to CUPPS standard

November 10, 2009 /India PRwire/ MindTree Ltd., a global IT Solutions Company, today announced that it has been selected as a CUPPS (Common Use Passenger Processing System) Testing Entity (CTE) by the CUPPS Committee, a collaboration of airlines, airports and vendors. MindTree is among a select few companies with the distinction of serving as a Testing Entity on the CUPPS platform. As a CTE, MindTree, with its deep airline domain expertise coupled with its strong Testing capabilities, is now able to:

  • Help airlines switch their IT applications from CUTE (Common Use Terminal Equipment) to CUPPS standard
  • Assist CUPPS platform vendors in certifying their products
  • Provide validation services to airline and airport applications that use those platforms

CUPPS is a common, standardized system platform for agent-facing common-use implementations at airports. As a CTE, MindTree has already provided CUPPS certification services to two of the world’s leading IT solutions providers to the air transport industry.

CUPPS aims to standardize data flow among airlines and airports around a simplified XML schema. CUPPS is an overhaul of the previous CUTE standard. Proliferation of non-standardized providers and their respective platforms and/or implementation methodologies made support of airline applications and airport environments difficult. CUPPS standard ensures a common system platform that reduces support costs – by allowing the use of one application by an air carrier, in both the proprietary and common-use environments – and enables integration with other airport systems such as those supporting flight information display and dynamic signage.

MindTree Head of Travel and Transportation Industry Group Siva Vajjhala said, “CUPPS is a path-breaking evolutionary standard that will transform the way airlines and airports deal with their passengers, and will yield tremendous cost savings to the aviation industry at large. We are indeed pleased that the CUPPS Committee has chosen us as their CTE. As a CTE, we are now able to add to our portfolio of services that we provide to our air transport industry customers.”

MindTree President and CEO – IT Services, Anjan Lahiri, said, “This is indeed a milestone in MindTree’s track record of leadership in the global travel industry. We look forward to contributing towards the creation of next-generation solutions and services for this rapidly evolving industry.”

MindTree’s decade-old Travel and Transportation Industry Group delivers IT solutions to global customers that span across airline, car rental, travel distribution, and hospitality industry segments. The types of services include application development and maintenance, legacy modernization, business intelligence and data warehousing, infrastructure management, testing, and others across a wide spectrum of technologies and products.

Wipro selects NComputing platform to power ESIC’s Project Panchdeep

Indian Social Security System to use 31,000 NComputing Virtual Desktop Clients and vSpace Software to improve services for 12 million beneficiaries

November 10, 2009 /India PRwire/ — NComputing Inc., the global leader in virtual desktops, today announced that it has won a massive computerization contract from Employee State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) alongside Wipro for deploying 31,000 NComputing virtual desktops in ESIC offices and clinics across the country. ESIC will use 31,000 NComputing thin-client workstations and vSpace Virtualization Software to outfit all ESIC offices and clinics with state-of-the-art Green IT systems. ESIC is the Indian Government Chartered insurance and healthcare organization delivering Social Security benefits to employed individuals and their families. It provides health insurance and delivers medical care to over 2,200 facilities across India.

ESIC and Wipro selected NComputing’s proven virtual desktops for ‘Project Panchdeep’, the largest e-Governance project in India, to streamline insurance and healthcare services that ESIC provides to employers, employees, and state and central government workers. The initiative includes the following:

  • Issuance 20 million medical ID cards that can be used at any ESIC facility
  • Creation of one of largest medical records databases in the world
  • Computerization of 144 hospitals, 620 insurance branches, 1,388 dispensaries/clinics, and 51 regional offices
  • Creation of a 50 million fingerprint database – the largest in India
  • Rollout of a single Unified Information System that automates all ESIC processes for greater efficiency, transparency, and accountability
  • Largest Cloud Computing deployment in India

In March this year, Wipro, the global provider of IT and business transformation services had bagged the largest E-Governance contract from ESIC worth Rs. 1,182 crore in a competitive tender process. Wipro will oversee the six year BOOT (Build, Own, Operate and Transfer) project. Over the next 15 months, Wipro IT engineers and consultants will deploy the NComputing-based solution in pan India. “Wipro’s constant endeavor has been to bring innovative, efficient and cost effective solutions to its customers. Wipro desktop platform with NComputing devices and software deployed at ESIC hospitals will ensure effective and optimum utilization of resources at minimum cost to ESIC beneficiaries,” said Mr Ashok Tripathy, General Manager, Wipro Infotech.

“We are honored that NComputing has been selected for this strategic initiative as it will vastly improve healthcare for the 12 million beneficiaries by speeding insurance and medical services,” said Mr. Stephen Dukker, chairman and CEO, NComputing. NComputing technology enables a desktop PC to be shared by up to 30 users and a server to be shared by hundreds of users – with each user getting a full computing experience. By sharing the PCs and servers, organizations can typically reduce purchase and support costs by 75% and electricity costs by 90%.

The NComputing solution includes both the virtualization software (vSpace) that creates the “virtual” sessions inside a PC or Server, and the thin-client devices that connect the users monitor, keyboard, and mouse to the shared computer. The NComputing thin-clients are the greenest computers on earth as they use just 5 watts of electricity – a major benefit in India where electricity is unreliable and require expensive UPS and back up generators.

For the Panchdeep project, ESIC has chosen to deploy NComputing’s L130 thin clients. Over 31,000 L130s will connect to Wipro desktop PCs which then connect to the largest Cloud Computing environment in India at ESIC data centers.

For the millions of ESIC beneficiaries, the e-governance initiative will result in faster claims processing, a single ID card that is accepted in all ESIC facilities, and the ability to use any hospital/dispensary in the network.

Last year, NComputing won the largest Indian education computing tender in Andhra Pradesh for installing 40,000 NComputing Virtual desktops in 5,000 government schools.

Stimulus to continue till robust recovery takes place in developed markets, says Pranab Mukherjee

The Indian economy has been able to fare well in spite of the adverse impact of the global economic crisis, due to the strength of its domestic demand, said Mr. Pranab Mukherjee, Minister of Finance, India, addressing the session titled “Post-Crisis Economic Order: How can Free Market and Control be Balanced?” at the 25th India Economic Summit, jointly organized by World Economic Forum and Confederation of Indian Industry in New Delhi. He said the stimulus packages provided by the government have been aimed at increasing domestic demand in the face of a global recession. This stimulus needs to be maintained for some more time till a robust recovery in developed nations takes place, he said, pointing to the continuous decline in exports that has been experienced by the country since September 2008. Developed markets constitute 60 per cent of our export market and it is not easy to diversify in the short-term, he added.

He said that GDP growth will return to the 9-10% growth trajectory by 2012. In the short-term, the lack of external demand and the poor performance of agriculture may be a constraint to achieving a higher growth rate. He outlined three areas as his priority for keeping domestic demand strong in the near-term: innovation in agriculture, investment in infrastructure and maintaining an appropriate fiscal and monetary policy. He said that while he had significantly increased allocations to all flagship schemes for rural areas, infrastructure growth would be funded through the PPP route.

He said that fiscal consolidation is imperative for India in the medium term and that he had set a target of reducing the fiscal deficit from 6.8% of GDP in the current year to 4.0% by 2011-12. While the RBI has successfully been able to raise resources for the government without crowding out private sector credit, such tight-rope walking cannot continue.

He expressed optimism that the collective determination of global leaders will address the problems faced by the international community so that the multilateral negotiations on trade and climate change can be successfully concluded. Meanwhile, the issues of stimulus and exit strategy as well as the new international financial architecture were being worked on by the G-20.

Mr Venu Srinivasan, President, CII, and Chairman and Managing Dierctor, TVS Motor Company, India, applauded the visionary measures taken by the Minister against the challenging backdrop of the global meltdown. He pointed out important measures that are being implemented, such as the Goods and Service Tax (GST) and Direct Tax Code, which will go a long way in simplification of tax regime. Talking about regulations, Mr Srinivasan said that both an overly regulated market and one without regulations can stifle growth, and therefore CII believes in maintaining a balance between the two.

Ms Chanda Kochhar, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, ICICI Bank, India; and Co-Chairman of the India Economic Summit, highlighted factors that contributed to economic stability in India amidst the worst crisis since the Great Depression. She said that stable and timely government policies, self regulation by Indian banks and the fact that Indian consumers were not overly leveraged, contributed to stability of the economy.

Ms. Kochhar pointed out that, going forward, India’s growth story will be driven both by domestic consumption and investment, as long standing investment projects, which were held in abeyance, are again becoming operational. She concluded by commending the Finance Minister on his message that protectionism cannot be the answer to the problems being faced by the global economy today.
