Brief Strategic Family Therapy° Institute at the University of
Miami Miller School of Medicine is pleased to announce the launch of www.BSFT.org,
a new Web site devoted to BSFT™, the cost-effective, evidence-based,
family-focused intervention which improves family relationships, treats
conduct problems and reduces delinquency and drug use. The BSFT™
Institute has trained and consulted at community mental health and
substance abuse agencies and judicial institutions in more than 40
states as well as sites outside the United States.
Developed at the Miller School of Medicine’s renowned Center for Family
Studies over the course of 37 years, research studies indicate BSFT™ can
achieve favorable outcomes at cost savings in comparison with the usual mental
health and juvenile justice services, such as detention,
incarceration and residential treatment.
These are changing times for behavioral healthcare, with the movement
toward evidence-based therapy a part of the national health care
discussion. Federal and state governments increasingly specify
evidence-based practices for community agencies. For example, North
Carolina Department of Health and Human Services recently changed its
Service Definition and Required Components to specify BSFT™ as one of
only seven acceptable Intensive In-Home Services for providers.
Web site communicates a depth of knowledge to a range of audiences
including legislators, the judiciary, clinical directors, educational
leaders, philanthropic foundations and other parties engaged in mental
health, juvenile justice, scientific research, public policy and
healthcare reform. Web site content illustrates how BSFT™ trainers are
teachers, facilitators, consultants and evaluators who guide therapist
trainees to create new patterns of family interaction, which reflect
improved family functioning as well as decreased problem behaviors and
drug use. The Web site features several key sections regarding Brief
Strategic Family Therapy° (BSFT™).

About Brief Strategic Family Therapy° (BSFT™) Institute
BSFT™ is a short-term, structured, problem-focused, and practical
approach to the treatment of adolescent conduct problems, associations
with antisocial peers, early drug use and the accompanying maladaptive
family interactions (relations), all of which are recognized risk
factors for delinquent behavior and substance abuse. BSFT™ strengthens
adolescents and their families. BSFT™ provides the family with the
necessary skills to function successfully during therapy and beyond.
Improvements typically last long after therapy has ended. BSFT™ is three
times more effective than other treatments in bringing adolescents and
their families into treatment. BSFT™ is typically delivered in 12 to 16
family sessions. For more information visit www.bsft.org.
