Nortel Unveils Industry’s First Commercially Available 100G Optical Solution

Verizon First Service Provider to Deploy 100G for Live In-Service Customer Network
TORONTO – Nortel* [OTC: NRTLQ] today unveiled the industry’s first commercially available 100G solution and announced that Verizon has deployed the solution in their live customer network in Europe.
Nortel’s 100G solution uses unique technology that allows service providers to increase the bandwidth of today’s typical 10G infrastructure by ten times without the need to rip and replace major parts of the network. This removes a significant cost barrier for today’s service providers with constrained CAPEX budgets.
Analyst firm Ovum estimates that global demand for 100G line side DWDM transponders will grow rapidly over the next five years, reaching US$455 million by 2014.
Nortel’s 100G optical solution uses groundbreaking technology that allows service providers to meet the demands that high bandwidth applications like HD video on demand, online gaming and cloud computing are putting on their network said Philippe Morin, president, Metro Ethernet Networks, Nortel. Our 100G solution is the result of years of dedicated research and development into this cutting-edge technology, and builds on two decades of innovation leadership in the optical industry
Using Nortel’s solution, Verizon has today become the world’s first service provider to deploy 100G technology in a live commercial network. Using its existing network, Verizon is carrying live enterprise customer Private IP traffic over a 100G wavelength on an 893km link between Paris and Frankfurt. Even more impressive is the fact that the 100G wavelength was simply added alongside in-service 10G wavelengths in the same fiber.
This 100G accomplishment is a milestone for the communications and optical industries, and is the result of leveraging the strengths of Verizon and Nortel said Mark Wegleitner, senior vice president of technology at Verizon. This type of cooperation and vision results in innovative and progressive solutions and will continue to be a requirement to successfully meet the increasing bandwidth demands of the future
Nortel’s 100G solution is based on technologies such as coherent detection, DP QPSK modulation, and advanced electronic digital signal processing techniques, all of which Nortel is the first and only vendor to successfully commercialize to date. More than 50 service providers and operators worldwide already rely on these technologies in live deployments of Nortel’s 40G solution, which has been generally available since May 2008. In addition to Verizon’s industry-first live 100G deployment, Nortel has previously conducted eight successful trials of its 100G solution with service providers around the world.
While other vendors rush to develop advanced 100G optical transport technologies, Nortel’s 100G solution has been tested and proven with some of the world’s largest service providers, including Verizon said Ron Kline, principal analyst, Network Infrastructure, Ovum. Nortel continues to push the envelope with 100G optical transmission, keeping its technology edge in high-capacity transport
Nortel’s 100G solution is part of its 40G/100G Adaptive Optical Engine family of products, with two compact 100G cards elegantly streamlined within Nortel’s flagship Optical Multiservice Edge 6500 platform . Nortel’s Common Photonic Layer line system can also be used as part of the 100G solution for in-line amplification and wavelength switching.
True 100G transmission
Nortel’s 100G solution provides for true 100G transmission in a format that can coexist over the same fiber infrastructure with today’s 10G and 40G networks. A Nortel 100G line card transmits the full 112Gbps payload within a single ITU ** standard 50GHz-spaced channel, allowing for a full 88 wavelengths over a single fiber.
Deployable on any fiber, reaching distances of 1,000km+
Optical transmission rates above 10G significantly increase signal distortion caused by fiber impairments, greatly reducing transmission distances possible before the need to regenerate the signal. To solve this problem, Nortel’s 100G solution uses Dual Polarization Quadrature Phase Shift Keying (DP QPSK) with coherent optical frequency division multiplexing. DP QPSK is a modulation format that effectively sends four times as much information as traditional optical transmission of the same speed. When paired with a coherent receiver that can detect this modulation format, the optical transmission rate can be slowed, reducing the effects of signal distortion such as Chromatic Dispersion (CD) and Polarization Mode Dispersion (PMD). Any remaining signal distortion due to dispersion is eliminated by integrated electronic dispersion compensation technology that adjusts for this distortion at the receiver side of the transmission.
By using these advanced signal processing technologies, Nortel’s solution can transmit a 100G signal, even over impaired fiber that can not be used for 10G transmission, without the need for separate optical CD and PMD compensators.
A simple and cost-effective evolution from 10G and 40G to 100G
Nortel’s 100G solution provides significant economic benefits through the reduction or elimination of a variety of network equipment such as amplifiers, regenerators, and dispersion and PMD compensators. This reduces the cost and complexity of deployment and creates the true value of Nortel’s 100G solution by allowing for a simple plug and play installation over existing 10G and 40G fiber networks with little or no need for network re-engineering. In addition, service providers with existing 10G networks from other vendors can increase network capacity to 100G by bookending their existing 10G optical infrastructure with Nortel’s 100G solution. This unique application has been tested in a live network trial for Nortel’s 100G solution and deployed by multiple service providers for Nortel’s 40G solution.

That is why we are naturally very pleased to see our efforts validated in the form of this award,” says Professor Martin Winterkorn, Chairman of the Board of Management, Volkswagen Group.

Selection as Car of the Year is one of the oldest and most esteemed awards in Europe. The best of all new car introductions have been awarded annually since 1964. The last time a Volkswagen won was in 1992: Back then the new third generation Golf emerged victoriously over the Opel Astra and Citroën ZX. In today’s competition, 59 jurors from 23 European countries cast their votes. The new Polo won with 347 points, outpacing the Toyota IQ.

Hakan Matson, president of the jury, had this to say at the award ceremony in Madrid: “It was the Polo’s comprehensive safety equipment and its advanced range of engines that impressed us the most. On the Polo BlueMotion Volkswagen was also able to add a very fuel-efficient yet affordable car to its car

programme.”

The Polo’s selection as Car of the Year 2010 is the crowning achievement of an extraordinary year for the new Polo after already being named Best Car 2009 by “auto motor sport” magazine and winning the Grüne (“Green”) and the Goldene Lenkrad (“Golden Steering Wheel”) awards by publisher Springer Verlag – as well as the Auto Trophy by “Autozeitung” just a few days ago.

ROIonline Announces Streaming Video Products

Until just several years ago, Websites were static. Dial-up and ISDN connections made streaming videos slow to load sporadic in their quality. But now thanks to the huge increase of broadband connections on the World-Wide Web, videos are everywhere.

This explosion in broadband connections is creating a revolution of video growth on the Web. Nowhere is the growth greater than sites using video spokespersons, short borderless videos that play when a Web page loads. Typically, an attractive spokesperson appears that welcomes the visitor to the site, explaining the capabilities of the company and pointing out other pages that are worthwhile to visit. Most videos average from 30 seconds to a few minutes in length and are proving to be a real benefit to businesses.

Rich Knapp, founder of ROIonline, points out that Engaging the visitor quickly when visiting a Website is one of the biggest challenges today. Videos engage them immediately with a story that would require the visitor to view and read multiple pages within the Website. The video conveys the message faster and more effectively than reading a static Web page.

This increased engagement and resulting decrease in the bounce rate from the Website, has resulted in many companies seeing a 10 to 20 percent increase in conversions. Videos are a solution that delivers a high return on investment.

Businesses have to have the proper tools to keep their Web site competitive in a global marketplace, Knapp explained. Sites must continue to use cutting edge technology to stay one step ahead of their competition and tell visitors quickly why their company is a good choice to do business with.

Each video message is custom tailored and designed to ensure ROI. ROIonlines services include: streaming videos, Website design, product shopping cart/RFQ catalogs, search engine optimization, pay-per-click campaign management, Website tracking and analytics, Internet marketing and media placement.

Agfa Graphics to acquire assets of Gandi Innovations Holdings LLC., a leader in large format inkjet printing systems

* Acquisition enables Agfa Graphics to significantly increase its presence in large format inkjet printing
* Gandi’s portfolio of mid-range large format printers is completely complementary to Agfa Graphics’ inkjet business
* The proposed transaction will allow Agfa Graphics to serve a large installed base.
Mortsel (Belgium) – Toronto (Canada) – Agfa Graphics announces that it has reached an agreement to acquire most of the assets of Gandi Innovations Holdings LLC’s North American operations and the shares of its principal foreign subsidiaries.
Gandi Innovations is a global leader in large format inkjet systems.
Since May 2009, it has been operating under CCAA protection in Canada and Chapter 15 in the USA.
The acquisition is subject to regulatory and court approval and the successful closing of the transaction. The price of the transaction is not being disclosed at this point of time, but it will have no major impact on Agfa’s financial debt.
Over the period 2001-2009, Gandi Innovations has created a large installed base of inkjet printing engines, reaching a sales peak of 127 million USD in 2008. Sales in 2009 have strongly suffered from the economic crisis (affecting in particular investment goods) and the uncertainty surrounding the company. Gandi Innovations’ long established team has a wealth of pioneering expertise and engineering excellence in large format printing technology. Gandi Innovations’ customers include many of the world’s leading Point of Purchase and large format printing companies. Over the years, they have come to rely on the company’s vision, reliability and cutting-edge technology.
Gandi Innovations was founded in 2001 and has its headquarters and its production facilities in Mississauga (Canada). The Group employs 256 highly skilled staff and operates worldwide through sales offices and distributors.
Combined with recent announcements on Agfa Graphics’ :M-Press Tiger industrial flatbed inkjet press and the launch of new printing engines in the :Anapurna large format range, the acquisition of the assets of Gandi Innovations strengthens Agfa Graphics’ leadership in large format inkjet printing systems.
The combination of Gandi Innovations’ products and Agfa Graphics’ products will result in substantial growth for our inkjet business based on an even more complete system portfolio said Richard Barham, Agfa Graphics’ Vice President Inkjet. This is an important step in implementing our Inkjet growth strategy. As our own portfolio consists of entry-level and high-end inkjet systems, Gandi Innovations’ mid-range systems are a 100% complementary fit with our existing inkjet technology
Gandi Innovations’ CEO and co-founder Hary Gandy added: Joining Agfa Graphics offers Gandi Innovations’ staff and customers tremendous opportunities for the future. The combined capabilities and coverage in customer service and research and development will accelerate the launch of new products, deliver new business opportunities and further expand our service to our customers
