Former Sports Minister Mr. Vijay Goel today met the Union Sports Minister Dr. M.S. Gill in context of Commonwealth Games 2010 preparation in Delhi. In almost an hour long meeting Mr. Vijay Goel expressed his concern towards the malfunctioning to the working of the Organizing Committee for Commonwealth Games 2010, which has created a chaotic situation where media reports and almost daily claims of the Organizing Committee widely differ.
Even CWG Federation in one of its confidential report has expressed reservation on the Organizing Committee capability to deliver the Games of high standard.
Mr. Goel drew Dr. Gill’s attention to news reports where claims are being made by the Organizing Committee of making profits even as the entire nation is worried whether the Games would be conducted at all in view of the lackluster preparations. He has urged the Minister to issue a white paper on funds and expenses of the Games 2010.
Mr. Goel submitted a detailed letter listing his concerns to the Union Sports Minister Dr. Gill and urging the Minister to refrain the Organizing Committee officials from creating confrontation with CWG Federation.
Mr. Goel urged the Minister to form a Committee of eminent citizens and Sports Ministry give a presentation of true facts relating to preparation of the Games 2010 so as to clear the position before the confused nation.
Dr. Gill assured Mr. Goel that the Centre is seized of the matter and a Group of Senior Ministers including Dr. Jaipal Reddy & Dr. Gill has been formed to accord necessary concurrence to Games 2010 Projects.
Apart from this the Centre has also got appointed a retired senior official Mr. Jarnail Singh as CEO for the Games and has also appointed two serving I.A.S. officers apart from a financial officer to keep a check on works and to closely monitor the preparations for Games 2010.
Dr. Gill further agreed with Mr. Goel that senior people on Organizing Committee should refrain from speaking out against CWG Federation.
Despite Mr. Goel’s request Dr. Gill could not give a schedule for TEST GAMES which is a proof enough of prevailing uncertainties in context of the Games 2010.
Mr. Goel has urged the Union Government to direct the Delhi Government to concentrate on the long pending infrastructure projects like Barapullah Elevated Road and Badarpur Metro line that have to serve J.L. Nehru Stadium & Games Village instead of meddling in Central Government Projects.
In a detailed letter submitted to the Minister, Mr. Goel has blamed the Indian Olympic Association President Mr. Suresh Kalmadi & Delhi Chief Minister Mrs. Sheila Dikshit for the helpless state of affairs in the matter of Games 2010 preparations even after 6 years of ongoing work. Mr. Goel says that the Games 2010 were confirmed on Delhi in early 2004 yet instead of concentrating on preparation of Games Village, Stadiums, Sportsmen or other infrastructure in the city both Mr. Kalmadi & Mrs. Dixit have been using Games 2010 for self promotion or to reap political mileage through Games Propaganda & Advertisements.
Letter welcomes the formation of High Level Committee by the Central Government for Games 2010 two days back but expressed dismay over Delhi Chief Minister’s announcement of extending all CWG Stadiums completion deadline to 31 March 2010 which has led to a new debate on feasibility of holding TEST GAMES or they being canceled.
The letter urges the Union Minister Dr. Gill to act tough and direct both Mr. Kalmadi & Mrs. Dixit to desist from speaking to media and instead appoint a spokesperson of High Level Committee to regularly brief the nation on preparations through media.
Mr. Goel has said that its a matter of shame that even as Games are less then 350 days away Indian Olympic Association instead of concentrating on developing a Medal Winning Team of Indian Sportsmen is engrossed in a diatribe with the CWG Federation.
Mr. Goel strongly criticized Delhi Chief Minister for talking on Stadiums which are more or less a Central responsibility even as essential city infrastructure projects like Barapullah Elevated Road Project, Badarpur Metro Rail Line to serve Jawahar Lal Nehru Stadium or Car Park projects are lingering on. Work of Refacing Connaught Place is going on extremely slow pace even as Chandni Chowk Refacing Project has not even started for lack of resources and most likely it wont even work up now with time running out.
Mr. Goel has said that holding of Games 2010 is a matter of National Pride and on this day due to the callousness of Indian Olympic Association people of India have lost faith in the preparation related official briefings so the Union Minister Dr. Gill must take initiative to form a committee of former sportsperson, senior journalists, eminent citizens including event sponsors, representatives of Delhi’s major political parties apart from Delhi Govt. & M.C.D. officials to timely assess & arrange for the needs of participating sportsmen, the media coming to cover the Games and the world class tourists who would come for the Games. This would help restore the confidence of people towards government’s resolve to hold the Games 2010.
Government should ensure the Nation that TEST GAMES shall be held and that sportsperson are being provided world class training to ensure a wonderful performance as ultimately it is the Number of Medals Won that shall bring Laurels to the Nation and not the hosting of Opening & Closing Ceremony on which I.O.A. seems to be more concentrated.
