Hong Kong: EAGA-flag bearers and oath-taking representatives announced

In response to media enquiries on the East Asian Games Association (EAGA)-flag bearers of the 2009 East Asian Games (EAG) Opening Ceremony, the EAG (Hong Kong) Company today (December 1) announced the lists of EAGA-flag bearers and oath-taking representatives as follows:

There are a total of eight EAGA-flag bearers. They are: Wan Kin-yee (athletics), Chung Hoi-yuk (badminton), Wu Siu-hong (bowling), Ho Kim-fai (rowing), Sherry Tsai Hiu-wai (swimming), Li Fai (wushu), Chan Mei-ling (judo) and Wong Fai (shooting).

There are two oath-taking representatives. Li Ching (table tennis) will take the oath on behalf of athletes while Gary Au Yeung Kwok-kei (tennis) will represent referees.

A spokesman for the EAG Company said that all the EAGA-flag bearers are medal winners of previous East Asian Games. They are nominated by their respective National Sports Associations (NSA) and the sports of these NSAs are current EAG sports.

As for the two oath-taking representatives, the spokesman said that Li Ching was a Hong Kong athlete participating in this EAG and had outstanding achievements in sports. Gary Au Yeung Kwok-kei is a Hong Kong referee of this EAG. He is a veteran and have served as referee in many large-scale international events.

Hong Kong: Employer ordered to pay MPF non-payment

The following is issued of behalf of the Mandatory Provident Fund Schemes Authority:

The Mandatory Provident Fund Schemes Authority (MPFA) today (November 26) pursued a claim in the Small Claims Tribunal for about $11,000 on behalf of an employee, who was owed MPF contributions by his employer.

Ng Chun Keung and Tang Sze Man trading as Chun Man Transport Co, did not dispute the amount claimed. The Adjudicator ordered it to pay the MPFA $11,296.84, being mandatory contributions in arrears and surcharges payable.

The amount awarded at the tribunal will be reimbursed to the employees MPF account as soon as it is received by the MPFA. The tribunal ordered the defendant to pay costs of $200.

The following is issued on behalf of the Honourable Chief Justice Andrew Kwok-nang Li today (November 19):

I am greatly saddened to learn that Sir Noel Power passed away today in Brunei after a heart attack.He had been sitting in Brunei as President of the Court of Appeal.

Sir Noel Power was one of the most outstanding Judges to have served Hong Kong in recent decades.He was an outstanding lawyer and his judgments have provided authoritative guidance in many areas, particularly in the criminal field.He had a fine intellect, robust common sense and an excellent judicial temperament.Above all, he had a strong sense of fairness and great compassion.He was held in the highest respect.

On behalf of the Judiciary, I shall be conveying our deepest condolences to Lady Power and his family.

Sir Noel Power joined the Judiciary in 1965 as a Magistrate and retired in 1999 as Vice-President of the Court of Appeal.He was Acting Chief Justice from August 1996 to June 1997.He was a Non-Permanent Judge of the Court of Final Appeal.
